Tom Wasylyk of Universal Publishing came to us with an exciting challenge: to create a context-sensitive Cursive Handwriting typeface that would set itself dynamically as the page layout artist typed the desired text.

Nathan had done this kind of work before, and had even received a patent for it! So, we set to work converting Tom’s original Cursive letterforms into digital, vector-based forms, then broke them down into their constituent glyphs for later programming.

We ended up with over 600 glyphs in FontLab and set to work creating a set of intricate, embedded OpenType Programs that would allow dynamic linkage in any OpenType-savvy application such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop.

I like using InDesign and the Wasylyk Cursive Font is great!–Tom Wasylyk

Below is a Quicktime movie of the resulting Wasylyk Cursive OpenType font in action using InDesign. You will need Quicktime 6.5 or higher for playback.

The Wasylyk Cursive OpenType font is Copyright 2004 Universal Publishing and is Patent Pending.

Video Notes:
1. The typing mistakes are intential just to show off the reconnection ability.
2. Small gaps appear between some letterforms on screen but do not print. This is merely a “screen display anomaly” in InDesign CS.
